"Legend of a Band:" (80 minutes - 1990 as VHS video and 12" laserdisc, 2001 as DVD)
25-Year History of the Moody Blues, which includes interview segments, music videos (see Section 5.17 for which ones) and clips of concert performances. The Canadian release of the video also included the bonus video for "Say It With Love", which adds about 4 minutes to the running time.

Official Moody Blues Fan Club video (53 minutes, VHS video only)
Includes performance clips and videos (see Section 5.17 for which ones) It also contains interviews with band members. This video was formerly available only through the Official Moody Blues Fan Club, but is currently out of print.

"A Night at Red Rocks" (90 minutes - 1992 as VHS video and 12" laserdisc, released 6/25/02 on DVD)
The Moody Blues live performance with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra recorded on September 9, 1992. The video includes 4 songs not found on the CD of the same name ("New Horizons", "Gemini Dream", "Say it With Love", and "The Story in Your Eyes". See Section 3.2). This tape used to be offered for sale by public television stations in their pledge drives and now is sometimes found in video stores. It is available through Good Work Ventures (see Section 3.9).

"The Other Side of Red Rocks" (85 minutes - VHS video and DVD)
Is a behind-the-scenes look at the Red Rocks performance from September 1992 and includes 4 songs not seen on the "A Night at Red Rocks" video ("Legend of a Mind", "Emily's Song", "Voices in the Sky" and "Bless the Wings"). It also includes an acoustic performance of "Driftwood", which was not part of the concert. It is available through Good Work Ventures (see Section 3.9) The DVD release (2003 in the UK and 2004 in the US) has an extra hour of interviews and rehearsal footage not found on the VHS release.

"The Moody Blues in South Africa" (44 minutes - VHS video only, 1995)
Is a behind-the-scenes look at the Moodies tour of that country in 1995. It also includes footage of the band performing live in front of an audience. The videotape was available only through the Official Moody Blues Fan Club.

"Justin Hayward Live in San Juan Capistrano" (113 minutes- 1999 on VHS video, 2002 on DVD)
Recorded at the Coach House over two nights in April 1998, and includes many solo songs, as well as Moody Blues favorites. It includes 4 songs and between-songs banter not found on the CD of the same name. The DVD version, released in March 2002, has the bonuses of a backstage interview with Justin, a clip of Justin receiving the ASCAP Golden Note award and doing an acoustic version of NIWS, and videos for "Silverbird" and "The Way of the World". The video is available through Good Work Ventures (see Section 3.9), and the DVD is available only on Justin's website www.justinhayward.com.

"The Moody Blues Hall of Fame: Live from Royal Albert Hall" (81 minutes - 2000 as VHS video, 2002 as DVD)
Records a concert performed May 1, 2000 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The video was shown widely on USA public television stations. Two versions of the show were made available to PBS stations, in 60-minute (with no breaks) and 80-minute format (plus breaks, which includes "Your Wildest Dreams", "Isn't Life Strange" and "I'm Just a Singer"). The long version is available commercially as VHS and DVD with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. The 14 songs performed are the same as on the companion CD of the same name (see Section 3.2).

"Access All Areas" (50 minutes - VHS video and DVD)
Was produced by Kristian Lodge, son of John Lodge. It is a "behind the scenes" look at the fan's and band's preparation for the show recorded at the Royal Albert Hall (see above). Included are interviews with the band members, Ivy Stewart of the Fan Club, and band manager, Mike Keyes and fans. The PAL video and DVD formats are available from John Lodge's web site www.johnlodge.com.

"Journey Into Amazing Caves" (38 minutes - 2001 as VHS video, 2002 As DVD)
The Moody Blues are featured on the soundtrack for this IMAX movie which premiered March 10, 2001. A VHS version was released in June, 2001, and a DVD version is scheduled to be released soon thereafter. The Moody Blues provide new songs "We Can Fly" and "Water" (instrumental), and re-worked versions of "Nights in White Satin", "Question", "I Know You're Out There Somewhere", "Your Wildest Dreams", and a remix of a live concert version of "Ride My See Saw" (not included in the soundtrack CD) for the soundtrack of this film. Justin Hayward also provided incidental guitar work. "Amazing Caves" was produced by MacGillivary-Freeman, who also produced the critically acclaimed IMAX movies "Everest" and "Dolphins", and narrated by Liam Neeson. Both the VHS and DVD contain a "bonus" 40 minute segment on the making of the IMAX movie. For information on the soundtrack CD see Section 3.2.

"Moody Blues EP" (DVD)
There are only three Moody Blues songs on this DVD, all in black-and-white. Denny Laine sings "Bye Bye Bird", Mike Pinder sings "I Really Haven't Got The Time" (with the Denny Laine era band), and the Hayward-era Moodies lip-synch "Nights In White Satin". The "extra features" are EP ads for twenty sixties groups with one song each, including "Deep Purple", "Alice Cooper", "Joe Cocker", "Ike & Tina Turner", "Roxy Music" and "Yes".

"20th Century Masters" (20 minutes - DVD released 2/24/04)
A compilation of music videos - "Your Wildest Dreams", "I Know You're Out There Somewhere", "The Other Side of Life", "No More Lies" and "Running Out of Love".

"The Lost Performance" (58 minutes - DVD released June 29, 2004) A previously-unreleased TV show of a 1970 concert at La Taverne de LíOlympia in Paris. On his website, Mike Pinder commented that the main vocals were live, but typical to the TV practices of the time, the instruments and some backing vocals were taped.

"An Audience with Justin Hayward at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" (58 minutes - DVD released 2004) A DVD of Hayward's June 21, 2002 singing/interview appearance in the Rock Hall of Fame "Legends" series in Cleveland, OH. (See Section 8.8.) Songs included "Your Wildest Dreams", "Heartbeat" (a Buddy Holly tune), "Tuesday Afternoon", "The Actor", "Voices in the Sky", "English Sunset", "Who Are You Now?", "Never Comes the Day", "Forever Autumn", "Driftwood", "Nights in White Satin", "Question". Bonus features are acoustic versions of "New Horizons", "I Dreamed Last Night", "One Lonely Room", "Bless the Wings (That Bring You Back)", "Voices in the Sky", "Blue World", "The Day We Meet Again" and "In My World", recorded at Bennett Studios in New Jersey exclusively for this release.

The band appears on several different discs, but laserdiscs have been firmly supplanted by DVDs. In addition to the usual 12" laserdisc there are also CD-Videos, which are CD sized but contain up to 20 minutes of CD-compatible sound in addition to 5 or so minutes of video. This means that you can put these into a CD player and hear the music but the player (even on a computer) will ignore the last track, which is the video.

The laserdiscs which have been released have also been released in other formats, and are noted above.

"My Generation - Psychedelic High" (videotape, 12" laserdisc and CD-ROM) - A VH-1 compilation by Rhino Home Video/Records, which also features Byrds and Small Faces. The collection is hosted by Peter Noone.

"Rock Encyclopedia 1973" (videotape) - Clips and documentary footage of the year in rock, 1973, by Music Video Distributors. Also featured: Carpenters, Stevie Wonder, Status Quo, Elton John and Rolling Stones.

"Message To Love: Isle of Wight Festival" (videotape & DVD) - Includes the Moodies performance of "Nights in White Satin" at the 1970 festival, earning them the first encore of their career. The video also includes vintage performances from The Who, Jethro Tull and Joni Mitchell. The video and companion CD are available commercially.

"30th Anniversary of Rock n' Roll - All-Star Jam" (videotape & 12" laserdisc) - A 1985 celebrity concert at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater. The band included John Lodge, Bo Diddley, Ron Wood, Kenny Jones, Mick Fleetwood and Carl Wilson.

"An Audience with Jimmy Tarbuck" (videotape) - Features guest appearances by Justin Hayward and John Lodge. This video was formerly available only in UK PAL format via the Official Moody Blues Fan Club.

"Ready, Steady, Go!" Vol. 3 (videotape) - Features Mark I Moodies performing "Lose Your Money" on the show of the same name in the early 1960s. The compilation video was released in 1984 and also features The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Jerry Lee Lewis.

"Golden Age of Rock And Roll (5 disc DVD set) - 130 unedited songs in vintage rock 'n' roll clips from the '50s, '60s and '70s from a variety of sources including Detroit's own Swingin' Time, Beat Club, and Musik Laden. Features the Moodies in the 'British Invasion' category.

"Jerry Lee Lewis and Friends" aka "The Killer" (VHS and DVD - 1989) - A 61-minute concert at London's Hammersmith Odeon teaming Lewis with John Lodge, Van Morrison, Dave Edmunds, Brian May (Queen), and Dave Davies (Kinks)

"Hullabaloo Volumes 1-4" (DVD) Complete Hullabaloo shows (a TV musical variety show 1965-66) previously available on individual VHS tapes featuring popular rock artists of the era including the Moody Blues.

"Beyond Life with Timothy Leary" (videotape 1997) - The Moody Blues are interviewed in the 79-minute video, and footage of them in the recording studio doing the remake of "Legend of a Mind" is included. There is a companion CD of the same title (see Section 8.7).

"Wired for Sound - A Guitar Odyssey" (VHS and DVD - 2000) - A 90-minute Canadian-produced documentary (originally aired on cable's The Learning Channel) of electric guitars and their players, including Justin Hayward. Also a visit to the Gibson workshop and concert footage of several artists with a clip from Red Rocks of "I'm Just a Singer (in a Rock 'n' Roll Band)".

"Gaia" (DVD, released in Switzerland) This DVD shows portions of the "Gaia" concert which took place January 20, 2003 at MIDEM, Cannes, France (see "Charity Appearances" Section 8.7) along with artist interviews. Justin Hayward performed at this benefit for the "Gaia" project and appears on the DVD.

"Sixties Rock" (DVD 2004) Features "archival performances," (from the "Hullabaloo" TV show)

"Wild Thing: The Sixties DVD Jukebox" (DVD) Features TV appearances from the German show "Beat Club"

"So You Want to Be a Rock and Roll Star" (DVD) Features TV appearances from the German shows "Beat Club" or "Musikladen". The Denny Laine era Moodies perform "I Really Haven't Got the Time".
